Millwall Football Club

GE2 Team collecting at Millwall FC
23rd April 2011

The GE2 Team had a busy Easter promoting the ride as well as collecting monies for the fund.

First though, a mention for poor Kriegie who was unable to join us following an accident (not his fault) and for Gramp's who developed the most horrendous cough, and having seen him, I for one, was glad he decided against coming. Hope you both get better soon.

Members of the team met up at Spud's house at 1pm on Saturday and sampled some of Pauline's bacon butties mmm, that went down well - thanks Pauline. Spud, Smudge, Muddy, Pud and I rode a selection of the Triumph's (ncluding the Steve McQueen replica) to Millwall Football ground where we were joined by Pauline and her daughter, Steph.

We set up the stand and were soon receiving fans who wanted to know what we were about and were very generous in their donations. We were busy explaining the ride and who had been sponsoring us, as well as letting kids sit on the bikes for photo's. The children who appear on our website do so with their parent's permission. The bikes were an attraction, especially the Steve McQ bike, as you would imagine.

The time passed by so quickly, that it was soon time to take delivery of the match ball, and a system devised for Smudge to carry it around the field. We then made our way to the appointed placed where Stewards kindly met us and led us into the airlock where we waited for the evening to start.

Soon, we saw the big doors open and we were beckoned out into the ground and started riding slowly around the field perimeter whilst announcements we made as to what we were about. I confess that I was very emotional under my crash helmet when the cheering and clapping started. I am now writing about it! The welcome that we received from the fans was second to none .... brilliant. Both children and adults at the front of the stands leant over to clap our hands as we rode by and we gladly responded. I will not forget the experience for a very long time, and I know the others feel the same.

Smudge wearing a Steve McQeen 't' shirt and trousers, did a couple of circuits carrying the match ball, until he stopped at the players tunnel. The ball was then handed over to service personnel who marched it onto the pitch. Smudge then finished his circuit and joined us.

We were lucky enough to be asked to stay and watch the match, which we did and this was made more special as Millwall, our hosts, won 4-0 against Preston. We also watched as a massive thunderstorm crossed the ground with forked lightening. It was so hot all day, that it was a bit of a surprise, and of course, we had to ride back to Kent. We did manage to remain dry.

Thank you to everyone at Millwall for looking after us so well!
